Where do Quebecers stand regarding their use of the Web, social media and smartphones? This is the question that CEFRIO tries to answer every year. Based on the data collected in 2017, the research and innovation organization has just published the generational component of Quebecers’ digital profile. Here are 4 highlights:
A general passion for the tablet!
While the 35-54 age group is the most numerous, at 63%, the 18-34 year-olds and the over 65s, who are at the back of the pack in this field, nevertheless follow closely, being respectively at 46% and 45% most likely to own one.
Only the 18-34 age group experienced a slight decrease of 5% in 2017 compared to 2016, while the proportion of other groups increased.
Smartphones: the big gap
It is a must for 18-34-year-olds – 88% of whom have one – and for most adults 35-54 years old (76%). This is the case for half of the 55-64 (52%). Those aged 65 and over are only 31% in this situation, which shows a considerable gap between them and the 18-34 age group.
That said, seniors are 7% more likely than the 2016 survey to have the youths’ preferred mobile device.
Internet: not all on the same page
The gap between the youngest and the oldest in the use of the smartphones probably explains why if the majority of 65 years and older, like the other groups, has Internet access at home (to 79% in their case), they are only 18% likely to connect to Wi-Fi networks outside their home compared to 81% for 18-34-year-olds.
Constant progression of online video
Quebeckers are more and more entertained by new technologies, and this is true in all age groups. 18- to 34-year-olds lead the pack, whit 95% of them watching videos, movies, or webcasts. The 35-54 follow at 85%. Apart from downloading books, the youngest generation also stands apart from others for its greater tendency to find entertainment on the Web (music and games).
